Let’s Go, KC!

Let’s Go KC: The Alliance for Transportation Choice is a new coalition of people and organizations interested in making Kansas City more livable by encouraging the city to support bicycling, walking, and public transportation.
The first issue the group is tackling is the city’s new development code, which effects planning and zoning, parking, traffic, etc. I’ve [...]

Bikes and Light Rail

Hopefully you’ve heard that light rail is a big deal around river city lately. Even if Clay Chastain’s plan is nixed, all signs point towards some kind of plan eventually getting built. So, what would that mean for cyclists? On one hand, improving public transportation and getting some automobiles will be a [...]

Tonight the city will hold a public meeting on a proposed trail along North Troost Avenue, between Englewood and Vivion. This trail would be funded with $250,000 from the TIF project that is building a new strip mall at the northeast corner of Vivion and North Oak.
While new trail development is certainly welcome, these types [...]

Bike Parking for NKC

KCMO isn’t the only metro city working on providing bicyclists with safe and convenient parking.  The Sun-Tribune reports that North Kansas City’s planning commission has asked the City Council to put bike racks in the city’s downtown area. Commissioner David Katz cites livability reasons as well as the opportunity to reduce demand for automobile parking.
Northland [...]

The suburb of Mission, KS is working on a new multi-use trail along Rock Creek, which flows adjacent to their downtown business district. It is part of the Johnson County Streamway network and is on a regional MetroGreen corridor that will eventually connect to the Brush Creek trail at the Country Club Plaza and onward [...]

Finally, at long last, dangerous storm drains and grates the one at the right are an endangered species.  New KCMO Bike/Ped Coordinator Deb Ridgway has been hard at work jump-starting the long-delayed BikeKC plan, which includes a big project to replace dangerous storm drains.
The Water Department is currently soliciting bids on three contracts to replace [...]

I can’t believe my eyes, but the rumors are true! Real, live, U-Racks have materialized in Downtown KC. These racks are on 12th Street, and were recently installed as part of the downtown streetscape master plan. Hopefully we will see more as the streetscape plan is implemented incrementally throughout the Loop.
There [...]

Blue Springs Trail Network

A recent story in The Examiner featured trail-building efforts in Blue Springs. That city has been slowly building up a trail network over the last 17 years, and now has a plan for a city-wide network of 30 miles. One challenge in Blue Springs has been the lack of a stream corridor or [...]

Bike Parking Proposal

This week the city will begin public meetings on its new planning, zoning, and parking ordinance. Included in this is section that will require bike parking for most businesses, schools, libraries, etc. If you’ve ever been in Chicago, Portland, Denver, etc and noticed bike racks in front of every video store, supermarket, or [...]

Deb Ridgway Profile

Yesterday The Star ran a profile of Deb Ridgway, who recently moved from Bridging the Gap to the City of KCMO to be its first ever Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator.
