More bike parking at the City Market

The metro’s biggest farmer’s market is a popular destination for cyclists, but has always lacked bike parking. New racks now provide secure parking for people bicycling to the market for grocery shopping, lunch at market restaurants, or a cup of coffee.

New hoop-style racks at three locations around the market have capacity for 16 bikes: The main entrance to the circle drive at 5th and Walnut, the north service drive on 3rd Street, and the northwest entrance from City Market Park and 3rd Street. Please be sure to use these racks when you visit the market. Showing high usage of the new racks is the best way to encourage market officials to add more bike parking in the future. Bike Clubs may merge

Kansas City has long had two strong bike clubs that organize a wide array of group rides, social activities, and tours. Now the Kansas City Bicycle Club and the Johnson County Bicycle Club are moving forward with a merger into one truly regional bike club.

The first step is for each club’s membership to vote on the merger. KCBC members will vote this Sunday at their Summer Bike n’ Brunch event on the Little Blue Trace Trail in Independence. JCBC members will vote August 29th at a special membership meeting.

Part of Cliff Drive closed for construction

A middle section of Cliff Drive is closed for construction until October of this year. The section between Lookout Point and Chestnut Avenue is closed for storm drainage improvements, installation of new curbs, etc. We recommend a detour between Lookout Point and Kansas City Museum entrances to Cliff Drive.

Tour Leawood’s public art on a bike

Spoke ‘n Art is a guided bicycle tour of twelve public art installationsin Leawood, with docents at each stop explaining the art pieces.

It starts in Ironwoods Park at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 11th and ends at Mission Farms, where riders can take advantage of special discounts at participating shops. The ride costs $20 and pre-registration is required.

Bike racks and public art in the Old Northeast

Bikes and art go so well together, and folks in the Old Northeast are working to bring some awesome bike racks and public art to their neighborhoods. Several very cool, sculptural bike racks have been designed and residents are raising money to install them in areas like Pendleton Heights, The Concourse, and the Kansas City Museum.

Test ride a bike sharing system this Friday

This coming First Friday is a very cool opportunity to test ride a public bike sharing system that will soon put KC in the company of cities like Paris, London, Denver, and Des Moines. Bike sharing has been hugely successful in other cites, and will be here in KC by this time next year.

Stop by 20th and Baltimore between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Friday to take a test ride on Bike Share KC. This new venture from Tricycle Transit and BikeWalkKC is bringing the B-Cycle system to KC for a demonstration. The system allows locals and visitors alike to quickly and cheaply rent a public bike for short trips around the Downtown and Midtown areas.
