The 816 Bicycle Collective has been at 31st and Troost for more than five years, providing Midtown and East Side residents with low cost bikes and an earn-a-bike programs that teach people bike repair skills and result in free bikes at the end of the program. The Collective has plans for a new home at 31st and Cherry, and local architects recently donated services to design the renovations of an old warehouse at that location.

Sunday evening at Californo’s in Westport the Collective unveil the designs for their new community bike shop at their 5th Annual Benefit Show, a fund raiser feature local music, great food, and a silent auction. Get all the details here.

Revolve is launching KC’s second community bike shop at 51st and Troost. They recently renovated an old gas station on the UMKC campus to provide bikes and bike education to UMKC and Rockhurst students and the adjacent neighborhood. Friday night is the shop’s grand opening, so stop by to check out the great renovation and the new services on offer.

The Dinner Bikes Tour is traveling the US with a chef, a writer, and a filmmaker. Thursday evening they will serve a delicious vegan-friendly dinner, preview an upcoming documentary about bike culture, and lead a discussion about bike advocacy and bike culture around the country. BikeWalkKC is hosting this great event at their office in the Crossroads Arts District.

June 26th is KC’s 2nd Annual Trashboat Regatta on the Missouri River. The goal is to make a river-worthy watercraft out of reused, recycled, and found materials. The vessel must either be bicycle-powered in the water or towed to the river by bicycle.

The Regatta starts at Kaw Point, ends downriver with a big picnic, prizes for the best boats, and a bike ride back to Kaw Point. For those who might be squeamishness about floating down the Missouri River on homemade boats, there will also be a bike ride parallel to the Regatta.

KC Sprints: Friday January 28th
Head over to Buzzard Beach in Westport after Critical Mass for season premier of KC Sprints, our very own goldsprints/roller races series.  Challenge friends to a grudge match at 8:00 p.m. or join the tournament at 9:00 p.m.  Or just come and watch, it’s a lot of fun.

Dress Your Bike For Winter: Saturday January 29th
MoBikeFed and the City of KCMO present another free class that will address the concerns of riding through the tough winters of Kansas City.  From tools to tires and racks to packs, this class will give you the info on carrying cargo, keeping clean, warm and dry while riding through KC’s challenging winters. The class starts at 10:00 a.m. at the Westport-Roanoke Community Center.

The 816 Bicycle Collective Makes Plans To Move To A Drier Location

Kansas City, Missouri – Last winter electrical damage from a constant leaking roof left the 816 Bicycle Collective without electricity for nearly 3 months.  Despite this setback, and the freezing temperatures, volunteers setup shop outside, (sometimes in the snow,) to help all-weather bicycle commuters with repairs.  The power is on now, it’s 80 degrees hotter, and with community support 816 is preparing the first steps of relocating to a new building, (with a better roof.)

The 816 Bicycle Collective is a recycle a bicycle project that has been helping people in the greater Kansas City area earn bicycles and learn about mechanics for the past 3 years.  The organization relies completely on donations and community support.

To help raise funds for a new, drier space, the collective is throwing a party themed BIKES ARE HOT at Californos in Westport located at 4124 Pennsylvania, Sunday, August 22^nd at 7PM.  Entertainment includes – DJ Madeline, live performances from Andean Express – an Andean folk music group, bike races sponsored by KC Cold Sprints, artwork and bicycle frames/parts for silent auction, games and more!
