Hot Cross Bottoms – urban cyclocross this weekend

Hey, kids. Urban Cross this weekend in the West Bottoms! Super fun mix of paved roads, gravel, dirt, loading docks, snow, paint cans, pallets, christmas trees, you name it and we will jump over it.

The 2011 Street Cred Series goes cyclocross this weekend. Hot Cross Bottoms starts at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, under the 12th Street bridge.

Not one but two state cyclocross championships this weekend

This weekend we are fortunate to have both Kansas and Missouri State Cyclocross Championships in our area. Saturday the Missouri championship (PDF) will be close by in Riverside, at E. H. Young Riverfront Park. Sunday the Kansas races (PDF) happen a little further afield in Topeka, but still an easy day trip from KC. So stock up on hot chocolate and wool for a full weekend of ‘cross action.

De Stad Cross Cup on Sunday

Tomorrow one of the metro’s biggest cyclocross races takes place in Leavenworth, KS. In addition to the usual categories, De Stad also includes first-timers and fixed gear ‘crossers.

New cyclocross race: Cross Out Cancer

Patrick Swayze Memorial Cyclocross

The Swayze Memorial Cross series returns again Wednesdays in October. The free show-and-go race happens at 6:15 p.m. in Midtown’s Roanoke Park, just north of West 39th Street.

Tour de BBQ
The Tour de BBQ had a huge turnout of almost 2,000 cyclists on Saturday, and KC Beer Blog has a great recap from a casual cyclist’s point of view. Congrats to everyone who rode to raise money for the Livestrong Army of KC.

Free bagels on the bridge 7:00-8:30 a.m. Ribbon cutting at 2:00 p.m., followed by first ride across the bridge and after party until 7:00pm at The Caddy Shack. Details.

Tour de BBQ – Saturday
Power & Light District. Benefit ride for Livestrong Foundation, followed by Smashmouth concert in the KC Live block. Details and registration.

Big weekend showcases much of our local bike culture

If you thought last weekend was big for bicycling in Kansas City, this weekend is even bigger. Events all over the metro area will give you a very big slice of local culture. There’s something for almost every persuasion, whether it’s spandex, fixed gear, singletrack, trails, or kids.

Friday

Park(ing) Day on Friday turns parking spaces into people spaces for a day. Locations in Downtown, UMKC, and Independence.

Saturday-Sunday

KC Cup Festival is a huge mountain bike and cyclocross race and race in Swope Park. Races for all ages and skill levels. Check out the progress one of the midwest’s only urban singletrack.

Swap Meet at Bike America in Overland Park promises some great deals.

Saturday

Pub ‘n’ Pedal Alleycat returns for its 4th annual photo scavenger hunt. This one is always a great time and great way to get out experience your city. Get your team together now!

Independence Family Bike Ride shows off the city’s new Rock Creek Trail.
