While there is a bit of tension in Westport around Critical Mass, it’s not about the mass itself, and it’s easily fixable.
If you haven’t seen the talk on the critical mass mailing list, here’s the deal. The Sunfresh market where the mass gathers simply tired of individuals leaving mountains of empty beer cans and other trash in their parking lot. Sunfresh and the other Westport businesses were happy to host pre-mass when folks cleaned up after themselves and only gathered for half an hour before riding. As mass has begun leaving later and later, the increased pre-drinking is leading to more trash and more annoyance for other customers. If the few individuals causing problems don’t shape up, the mass will be evicted.
It’s been rightly pointed out how ironic it is for people participating in an eco-friendly event like critical mass to be littering so badly. KC is very fortunate to have one of the more friendly and easy-going masses, free of the drama and confrontation seen in other cities. So let’s all keep it that way. All we have to do is pick up after ourselves and head out closer to the 6:30 p.m. starting time.
