KC communities score over $150,000 in Safe Routes to School grants

Cities, school districts, and law enforcements agencies around the metro area recently received over $150,000 in Safe Routes to School grants designed to make it safer and easier for children to walk and bicycle to school.  The Safe Routes to School is a federal grant program administer by state departments of transportation.

All together the KC metro area received about 27% of funds awarded across the state. Extra kudos to the Jackson County Sheriff’s office for stepping up to work with Safe Routes to School in KCMO schools south of the river.  So far the KCPD has declined to participate in Safe Routes programs.

City of Belton: $23,386 for law enforcement activities on roadways near schools.

City of Grandview: $21,830 for student education about vehicle/pedestrian interaction and speed management on roadways near schools.

Jackson County Sheriff and Hickman Mills School District: $25,000 for student education about vehicle/pedestrian interaction, speed management on roadways near schools, and public awareness activities.

Jackson County Sheriff and Indian Creek Elementary (Center School District): $25,000 for student education about vehicle/pedestrian interaction, speed management on roadways near schools, and public awareness activities.

Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Foundation: $35,000 for bicycles and equipment to create mobile bicycle education center to educate students around the metro area.

Parkville Police Department: $11,659 to increase speed awareness and enforcement around schools, plus student bicycle education.

Raymore Police Department: $18,000 to increase speed awareness and enforcement around schools, plus student bicycle education.
