The new KCMO budget for 2010-2011 includes $1.25 million for Trails KC projects over the next year. That’s not too shabby during such challenging budget times. We may see construction on the Van Brunt and Line Creek projects this year. The Trolley Track/Indian Creek project is still being engineered.
- Citywide: $100,000 for an emergency trail maintenance fund.
- 1st District: $68,500 – Shoal Creek Trail (construction)
- 2nd: $483,226 – Line Creek Trail (design and construction)
- 3rd: $250,000 – Van Brunt Trail (design and construction)
- 5th: $250,000 – Trolley Track/Indian Creek Trail Connection (design and construction)
- 6th: $250,000 – Trolley Track/Indian Creek Trail Connection (design and construction)
- 6th: $100,000 - Three Trails Corridor Trail (design)
These funding decisions are made by the City Councilmembers in each district, in conjunction with their representatives on the Public Improvements Advisory Committee. Since the Trails KC plan was adopted by the City Council in November 2008, the City has allocated a total of $3.4 million to Trails KC projects. These City funds have been supplemented by $1.2 million in Federal grants and the $4.9 million that MoDOT is spending on the Heart of America and Chouteau Bridges.
That’s almost $10 million for trails in under three years, and good progress towards that $10 million that is needed every year to build out the trail system in a timely manner. Here’s a summary of Trails KC Funding to date (PDF).

What’s the status of the Brush Creek Trail? The last I heard the completion to Blue River was funded and slated for construction.
