As we have mentioned before, the metro area is applying for another round of transportation stimulus funds from the federal government. After much negotiation, regional leaders have settled on $12.1 million in bicycle and pedestrian projects in the City of Kansas City, MO. The original proposal was for $35 million, but all projects had to be reduced to fit into the available budget. The $12.1 million will still be a huge boost to the city’s bike/ped plan, if the overall application is funded by the US Department of Transportation.
Here are the details for the bike/ped projects. Let’s Go KC has the full list of projects, which include transit and other things. A big thanks to everyone who wrote letters of support. Your efforts were instrumental in our inclusion.
- Multi-Use trails: $4.8 million. Will be used to help fund the Trails KC Five Year priority plan, including connecting the Trolley Track and Indian Creek Trails.
- On-Street Bicycle Facilities: $2 million. Expand the signed bike route system from 200 miles to 400 miles, add bike lanes to many of the routes, and install bike parking around the city.
- Pedestrian/ADA: $3.3 million. Repair and widen sidewalks, improve crosswalks, adjust traffic signal timing, install curb cuts, etc.
- Education/Encouragement: $2 million. Bicycle skills classes, bike industry job training, safety education, etc.
And additional $5.2 million is planned for pedestrian improvements along future MAX Bus Rapid Transit routes – things like sidewalks, bus shelters, crosswalks, etc.
