Bicyclist fatality on I-35 near Downtown

Tragic news from early this morning, a bicyclist was hit and killed on I-35 northbound near the northeast corner of the Downtown Loop.    A trucker who may have hit the cyclist has returned to the scene after hearing about on the radio. The police investigation is ongoing, and they are not yet speculating why the cyclist was on I-35. Most TV reports say the accident was just south of Front Street, which might lead some to suspect the cyclist was attempting to cross the  Missouri River on the Paseo Bridge.  However, KMBZ radio suggests it might be further south, between Admiral and Independence Boulevards. We will probably have to wait a while to learn the exact circumstances.

Update at 1:30 p.m.

Fox 4 is saying that the crash occurred where I-35 passes over Front Street, which suggest that perhaps the cyclist was indeed approaching the Paseo Bridge in an attempt to cross the  Missouri River.

KMBC-TV 9′s Bev Chapman, who is a cyclist herself, shows the current best river crossing on the Heart of America Bridge and says Channel 9 will have more at 5:00 p.m. tonight.

KCTV-5 has video with KCPD Sgt. Jim Fullerton, who says the cyclist did not have any identification.
