Trail progress in south KC

This month marks some good progress on trail projects on the city’s far south side, both of which are high priority corridors in the new Trails KC! master plan.

Santa Fe Trail

This trail will eventually extend from the future Blue River Trail west to State Line Road, where it will connect to the Johnson County trail system via bike lanes on 123rd Street in Leawood. Nearby destinations include Avila University, DeVry University, Minor Park, and the mountain bike trails along the Blue River. Yesterday a ground-breaking ceremony was held for a new segment between Oak and Pennsylvania. Attending yesterday’s groundbreaking were Sixth District City Councilmembers John Sharp and Cathy Jolly and State Representative Jason Holsman.

Triangle Trail

This new trail is part of MoDOT’s reconstruction of Grandvie Triangle.  It features a new bike/ped bridge over US 71 Highway and a new trail along the east side of the highway.  Tuesday there is a ground breaking for a new segment on the west side of the highway, which eventually extend to the Blue River.

Great news, I am looking forward to this section of trail.

This is great news! Currently my commute takes me up Red Bridge to Hickman Mills drive, and down Hickman Mills for a while. It would be nice if they could cut a trail from Blue River right after the interstate to hook up with where this one connects with Grandview Rd, but I’m guessing the golfers don’t want a bunch of cyclists riding through the middle of their fairways :) Either way, this new trail will keep me off Red Bridge road and Hickman Mills drive for at least part of my trip.
