KSHB-TV 41: Bike Week celebrates pedal power

“I live three miles from a bus stop,” Dunker explained. “I decided to buy a bike and just ride to work.”
This week, Dunker will be joined by hundreds of other metro cyclists who pedal to the office instead of hopping behind a steering wheel. It is all part of the Bike Week celebration.
Monday morning, Dunker met several other cyclists for a commuter convoy in a parking lot near 85th Street and Quivira Road. Together, the group took the 14-mile trek to their jobs in downtown Kansas City.
Dunker said the convoys meet at spots around the metro every week and commute together to increase their visibility on the roadways. Experienced cyclists provide assistance to beginners to help them learn how to share the road with cars and fix problems like flat tires.
Since starting the two-wheeled commute last year, Dunker said he has noticed financial and health-related perks.
“I lost 50 pounds before gaining a few back over the winter,” he said with a laugh. “Now, I’m pretty much hooked on it. I can’t even imagine driving downtown and paying the parking fees anymore.”
To share cycling news and stories, Dunker also blogs about his experiences.
This year, the Bike Week festivities will revolve around a “Car-Free Challenge.”
Commuters will compete to eliminate car trips and replace them with walking, biking or taking public transit. People who log the most miles can win prizes.
In all, there are more than 60 bike-related activities scheduled throughout the week.
A handful of shops and restaurants will also offer discounts to people who show up with a bike helmet in hand.
