Cyclist hit on 87th Street in Johnson County
Published May 2nd, 2008 in Crashes, suburbsKMBC-9 reports that yesterday a bicyclist was hit on 87th Street at I-35 in Johnson County, KS. There are few details, but this intersection is notoriusly challenging for bicyclists and pedestrians. A lot of the problem is KDOT’s use of Single Point Urban Interchange - a design that moves a lot of cars very quickly, but increases the danger for bicyclists and pedestrians.

I cross the 87th St. bridge twice a day, 5-6 days a week. It is, by far, the most dangerous part of my bike commute. Sorry to hear about the accident. I would like to hear more details. My practice is to become part of the traffic. I must turn S. on Quivira, from eastbound 87th St. Taking the “sidewalk” is much slower and, IMO, even more dangerous, considering all the access ramp crossings. Any suggestions?
