Here is a project I’ve been working on for a while now. It’s a database and map of bike parkng in the metro area. Many of the bike meccas like Portland or Chicago started by simply installing U-Racks all over town. Giving people a place to park at the coffee shop, grocery store, or office building is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to encourage bicycling. Sure, bike lanes are snazzy, but I think a place to lock up is just as important.
For such a supposedly non-bike-friendly city, I am always surprised about the unlikely places I find bike racks. From Downtown parking garages to suburban Targets, KC doesn’t have it too bad. And the new bike racks on 12th Street are a great sign of things to come. This summer, look for more bike parking in the Power & Light District, city-owned garages, and other places.
In the mean time, please let me know about the bike parking locations in your neighborhood.
