Pitch feature on bike crashes

This week’s Pitch has a big feature on cyclists who have been killed or injured in car/automobile encounters, including a photo gallery of many folks you might know or have ridden with. It’s written by Carolyn Szczepanski, who is a cyclist herself.  While the lead-in is overly dramatic and doom-and-gloom, the actual profiles are quite good. And the photo gallery is powerful for putting faces with stories.

Now that the Pitch has done several stories on the challenges of cycling in Kansas City, I think it’s time for them to start covering the more positive aspects.  For every story of a crash or death, there are many more stories about people safely using bikes for transportation and recreation.  Hopefully as our local media’s coverage of cycling begins to mature we will see a more accurate representation of all good with the bad.
