Olathe Update

About 15 cyclists together rode to Thursday’s public meeting, and several more rode on their own.  I think about half of the crowd there were cyclists.

At the moment, bike lanes are still in the plan for 127th Street.  The city has done quite a bit of work to squeeze this road project into the smallest possible right of way. They are using eleven-foot lanes instead of the usual twelve, and the bike lanes will be four feet instead of the preferred five.

It was also clear last night that bike lanes essential.  While the city is compromising with a 40 m.p.h. posted limit, the physical design of the road will actually be built to a higher speed.  For a road like this, five- or even six-foot bike lanes are preferred, so we already compromising with four feet lanes.
