Charges filed in Gaunt wreck
Published September 29th, 2007 in CrashesThe Missouri Bicycle Federation reports that Jackson County Prosecutor Jim Kanatzar has charged William Johnson of Grandview with involuntary manslaughter for hitting and killing Larry and Sierra Gaunt last month. This is a felony charge that carries a maximum prison sentence of seven years for each count. No word on when the case might go to trial.
The Star’s Crime Scene blog has more info with the probably cause statement and accident report. It looks like Johnson was going at least 10 m.p.h. over the speed limit. While he stated that the bicyclists were on the shoulder and veered out in front him at the last minute, at least three witnesses stated that the Guants were indeed riding in the right-hand lane of traffic and moving in a straight line.
