Good rides for beginners
Published July 21st, 2007 in RidesIf you or someone you know is interested riding more, there are several options throughout the KC area that allow you to get more experience riding with a group and on the streets with traffic. Here are some great options with a slow pace that all make sure no one is left behind.
Mondays - Northland
The Wheel Cyclery on Antioch leads a Mell-O Monday ride with 12 or 20 mile options in a relaxed route through the scenic Northland and into historic North Kansas City. The ride leaves at 6:15 p.m. from The Wheel at 5126 NE Antioch, KCMO (Antioch and Vivion). More info from KCBC.
Mondays - Johnson County
The Trek Store of KC leads the Monday Recovery Ride at 6:30 p.m. The route varies every week, but the pace is slow and no one is left behind. The store is behind the Scooter’s Coffeehouse on Shawnee Parkway, just west of I-35.
Wednesdays - Northland
Cycle City’s Wednesday Fun Ride starts at 6:00 p.m. at 7749 NW Prairie View Road, just south of Zona Rosa near I-29 and Barry Road.
Thursdays - Brookside
One of KCBC’s most popular rides recently added a shorter eight mile option for beginners or casual riders. Ride leader and KCBC Advocacy Chair Laurie Chipman starts each ride with a lesson on safely riding in traffic, signaling, changing lanes, etc. This ride leaves shortly after the main Brookside group at 6:30 p.m. from the north Brookside parking lot (north side of 63rd Street just east of Brookside Blvd). More info at the Brookside Ride Yahoo Group.

You will often find me chillaxin’ with the guys on the Monday night Trek Store ride. It’s a nice change of pace from my commute, and there’s usually free beer (for the people of age) afterwards. I can’t say what the other rides are like, but at the Trek Store ride, you can find a lot of diversity in age and experience.
Any of these rides will be great for someone who is not yet comfortable riding in the street. Sidewalks, especially at intersections, driveways and crosswalks, can be really dangerous on a bicycle. Any of these rides will help new riders gain confidence on the road while making new friends and getting a little bit of light exercise in. Experienced riders can enjoy the scenery and fellowship while loosening their legs up after a hard weekend of riding, too.
Thanks for posting these!
