South Loop Bridge Closures
Published April 9th, 2007 in Bridges, CommutingWith almost no advance notice, MoDOT and the City have started construction on four bridges across I-670 between the Downtown Loop and the Crossroads District. The project will make the bridges more pedestrian-friendly in time for the autumn opening of the Sprint Center and Power & Light District, but for now it means intermittent closures on Main, Grand, Baltimore, and Walnut. While Oak and Locust are already closed for complete bridge replacement, Charlotte and Holmes remain open and unaffected by the construction.
Traffic will be restricted on five bridges over I-670 on the south side of the Downtown Loop beginning this week and lasting into the fall.
MoDOT will begin bridge rehabilitation, deck repair, sidewalk improvements and preparation for decorative railing on the Main Street bridge beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, April 9. Various lanes will be closed in each direction from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day through the end of this week or until work is completed.
Beginning Monday, April 16, crews will begin round-the-clock construction to accelerate repairs on other four downtown bridges at Baltimore, Walnut, Grand and McGee. Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, April 16, the Baltimore Avenue bridge will close to traffic for approximately two weeks until work is completed.
The Walnut Street bridge will close as soon as the Baltimore bridge reopens, likely in early May. That closure is also expected to be for about two weeks.
Next comes work on Grand Avenue bridge. The wider bridge will allow for lane closures instead of a total shutdown, but the work will take about a month, beginning approximately in mid-May.
Finally, the McGee Street bridge will be completely closed as soon as work is completed on the Grand Avenue Bridge. The closure is expected to occur from mid-June until early July.
Work on bridge railings - which will require various lane closures for several days at a time on each bridge - will continue throughout the summer and into fall until work is completed.
