In May 2005 Mayor Kay Barnes signed the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, an initiative to implement the Kyoto agreements on a local level in the absence of federal leadership. Unfortunately the Chamber of Commerce got involved in the legislative process and the result was a toothless ordinance with few real targets for greenhouse gas reduction.
However, the city is still going through the motions. This Thursday you can get a peek at the process when the Climate Protection Plan Steering Committee holds a public meeting. Keep in mind that KC's rate of cycling is less than half the national average, so this would be a great opportunity to ask the city for a strategy to increase that rate.
