Mayor candidates
Published November 17th, 2006 in Advocacy, PoliticsLast night's mayoral forum didn't have any audience questions, but the focus on urban issues did lead to some candidates mentioning bicycles. Here are some highlights…
Katheryn Shields
Currently the Jackson County Executive. Stressed the environmental and sustainability benefits of promoting bicycling. Argued for mode choice, or the option to travel by "bus, bike, or feet." She may have set a record the most utterances of the word "sustainability" in one evening.
Becky Nace
Currently City Councilmember for the 5th District (Southeast KC). Said we should stop worrying so much about making it easy and cheap to park automobiles. Raise parking prices and curb the growth of mega garages in the urban core as one strategy to encourage more transit usage, bicycling, and walking.
John Fairfield
Currently City Councilmembr for the 2nd District (Downtown and Platte County). Stressed his recent advocacy for bike issues, especially holding MoDOT's feet to the fire regarding safe bike/ped crossings over the Missouri River. Also mentioned the need to improve bike transportation options. Stressed the need to make KC more progressive and take risks.
Jim Glover
Currently City Councilmember for the 4th District (Midtown to Waldo). Talked about mixed-use, bike/ped-friendly neighborhoods.
Chuck Eddy
Currently City Councilmember for the 6th District (Far south KC). Also emphasized the need for modal choice, i.e. transit, cycling, walking. Lost points with cheer leading for the bike-hostile diagonal parking as way to increase on-street parking, and a pet project of the Urban Society and Crossroads Community Association.
