Young bicyclist injured
By The Examiner staffA 7-year-old boy was sent to the hospital after he was hit by a car while riding his bike through his Independence neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.
Freddy Rios was riding his bike along the 2800 block of Cogan Drive when he tried ed to cross the street at East 28th Place Street just and was hit by a woman driving a Dodge Dakota.
Police said that the boy did not see the truck as he entered the intersection until the last second. They added that it looked as if the boy tried to jump off of his X-Games bike once he saw the truck but did not fully clear the vehicle.
Paramedics said Freddy would be OK, but he was taken to the hospital on a stretcher as "just a precaution." Family members through a translator said that Freddy also might have broken his leg after he jumped from the bike.
Neighbors who gathered as police and paramedics arrived said that speeding along Cogan has been a problem in the past.
"There are always people going far too fast along this road," neighbor Shawna Williams said. Police said they could not tell if the driver was speeding.
The boy was conscious and talking with paramedics as they loaded him into the ambulance.
Police did not release the name of the driver.
